Explore the world of wines
One of the most exciting things about
choosing wines is that there is a world of wines out there for you to choose
from! It doesn’t matter whether you pick famous wineries or less well known ones
– you can truly go global! So, let’s take a look at the wine choices you can
make from the world of wines today…..
The first thing to remember about the
world of wines is that it tends to be classified as Old World or New World. In
general terms, Old World wine and wineries are found in Europe with the rest of
the world being classified as New World.
Old World
Countries
France
France is probably one of the best known
countries when it comes to wine. The wineries here are steeped in tradition and
produce some of the best known French Wine brands including Bordeaux, Burgundy,
Beaujolais, Sauvignon and Pinot. And, let’s not forget the French really do know
how to make the best champagne!
Germany
If you think about German wine then
you’ll probably first think about the Riesling grape variety. The white grapes
produced in this country are amongst the finest in the world.
Italy
Italy’s wineries have a fantastic
reputation for producing some great red wines such as Chianti but it’s also
worth looking out for their Valpolicella and Soave wine offerings as well.
Portugal
Portugal’s wineries may be best known
for their Port production but this country’s wines can be fantastic too. The
best new wines coming out of the country are the reds.
Spain
Don’t think that Spain is all about
sherry (although they are masters of their craft there!). Spanish wine can be a
real treat – wineries produce some fantastic Riojas – both white and red.
The New World wineries are also a great
source of some truly exciting wine.
Argentina
Argentina’s wineries are often much
under-estimated which is a big mistake! The country produces some great wine
including Chardonnay, Merlot and Malbec.
Australia
Australia’s wineries produce some great
blends and some great single-source wines at the moment. Try this country for
Chardonnay, Riesling, Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon.
New Zealand
If you want to try something different
then give New Zealand’s wineries a try. This country is producing a wide range
of red wines and white wines at the moment, most notably Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc,
Pinot Noir and Riesling.
South Africa
If you are looking for a South African
wine then do try their Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz varieties. The wineries
here, however, are packed full of some generally great reds and whites.
USA
California has rapidly become one of the
best known wine producing regions in the world. This region is currently great
for Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling and Shiraz.
Canada
With over 400 wineries Nation wide, Canada is gaining recognition for producing many fine wines. Canadian ice wines have won numerous
awards, boosting the reputation of the Canadian wine industry as a whole.
The great thing about wine at
the moment is that you can dig out a delight from virtually any country – and
finding it can be great fun too – happy hunting!
